I’m ashamed to say that I absolutely had no idea how close the Yorkshire Dales were to Manchester, until my boyfriend decided to surprise me with a little last minute getaway last week! We went for a night’s stay in a little cottage over the bank holiday weekend and spent our time in Kirkby Malham, Malham and Settle we did a long walk on Sunday from Malham and then stayed the night and did a shorter one on Monday before heading home! I always find when I’m in a bit of a funk like I have been lately, that some time spent in nature helps my head clear and last weekend definitely did that.
On Sunday we followed a route from Malham Town to Janet’s Foss climbing up through Gordale Scar and then across the tops of the hills to Malham Tarn, ending the walk with amazing views from Malham Cove.
The weather was really on our side so the views were incredible. We took lunch with us and after climbing Gordale Scar (not an easy climb, so be careful!) we picnicked in the sunshine before heading on to the Tarn and Cove.
As always when walking we never 100% stick to the route, we tend to go off exploring when we see something exciting/interesting..! So after a knackering day of 20km and 27,000+ steps we had food at a local pub and headed to bed in our gorgeous Airbnb Cottage ready for the next day.
The following day we headed to Stainforth for a short walk before grabbing a bite to eat in Settle and heading home in the early afternoon. We went to Catrigg Force on our walk in Stainforth, it’s so lovely to have seen 3 waterfalls in 2 days, a sight you rarely get to see in the UK.
It’s safe to say we’ll definitely be heading back soon, especially considering how close it is! So grateful for the lovely surprise from my partner, seems like it’s my turn to get booking something next time, if you have any ideas send them my way! I’m thinking Lake District somewhere…..?
